The Revolutionary War and the Creation of the United States
In 1776 the thirteen English colonies declared that they wanted to become an independent country from England. The colonies met and a man named Thomas Jefferson wrote a document called The Declaration of Independence, stating that the United States (the 13 colonies) were an independent country. This document was approved by the 13 colonies on July 4, 1776, and that is why we celebrate July 4, the day that we declared that we wanted to be an independent country from England.
Because they wanted to be an independent country, the people in the colonies declared war against England who wanted the colonies to remain loyal to England. This war is known as the Revolutionary War. The leader of the colonists was George Washington. The first battle of the Revolutionary War was fought at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts in April, 1775. There were many battles with some battles fought as far north as Canada and others fought as far south as Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia. The last battle of the Revolutionary War was fought at Yorktown, Virginia in October, 1781.
The war officially ended in 1783. The colonies won the war and the United States of America became an independent country and the thirteen original colonies became the thirteen original states.
After the Revolutionary War, England conceded (gave) the United States all of the land to the Mississippi River.
